The Makers Behind the Felted Fleece Collective
The Felted Fleece Collective is centred around a small group of resident makers dedicated to the craft of working with natural fleece.
While the core artists form the foundation of the Collective, guest felters are occasionally invited to share their work, bringing fresh perspectives while maintaining the craftsmanship and values that define the collection.
Deborah Griffin - Founder & Artist | The Felted Fleece Collective
My journey into making felted fleece rugs began through my work with my other business, The Living Rug® Company, where I first began working with felted fleece rugs 2014.
Over time, interest in the rugs grew beyond what I could produce alone. Rather than expanding my own flock of sheep, it felt more natural to work alongside other skilled felt artists whose work shared the same respect for fleece and traditional techniques.
In 2020, The Felted Fleece Collective grew naturally from that moment. Karolina Begier has been part of the Collective since its early days, and her work continues to form an important part of the collection.
Over the years, our rugs have appeared in publications and collaborations with Piglet in Bed and selected independent stores in both the UK and the US. The work has also found its way into fashion and film — opportunities received with quiet gratitude.
One particularly intriguing commission came from a gentleman in Hollywood who introduced himself only as “Mr Pink.” It was later suggested he may have been a rather well-known film director — though the question was never asked. Some things are perhaps nicer left as a quiet possibility.
The aim remains simple: to create high-quality felted fleece rugs, support fellow artists, and honour the sheep that started it all.
Karolina Begier - Resident Felt Artist | The Felted Fleece Collective
Karolina discovered the art of felting over a decade ago, creating her first rug out of simple curiosity. What began as an exploration of wool and process soon grew into a lasting passion and an integral part of her daily life.
Over the years, she has developed her craft through dedicated hands-on practice, drawing knowledge from books, online communities and countless hours working directly with fleece. Through patience and experimentation, she learned how water, soap and movement can transform loose fibres into strong, enduring forms.
Karolina carefully sources the wool for her rugs, often travelling to meet the sheep and selecting fleeces personally. Ensuring the wellbeing of the animals is central to her practice — the wool she works with is treated as a natural gift rather than a commodity.
Each rug is shaped slowly and intentionally by hand, allowing the fibres to settle and transform into tactile pieces rich in texture and character.
Karolina’s work has been featured internationally, including displays at Diani Boutique in California and within a Piglet in Bed campaign, where her rugs were styled within relaxed interior settings.
Through her work, she aims to bring warmth, natural texture and a quiet sense of calm into contemporary homes.
